Several lessons focused upon the setting in 'The Help' and the theme of isolation. Created with the new AQA A Level English Literature Specification in mind. Opportunities for group work, class discussion and individual analysis.

Designed as a starter to go alongside the teaching of Dowd's 'The London Eye Mystery', but could be used as a starter activity for any lesson. Different images of clouds are used as a prompt for the description of thoughts, feelings, physical features. A good build up to the creative writing tasks in the new GCSE, which require descriptive writing from picture stimulus. Could also be printed off and used as a group/carousel task.

Outline for possible group task based on Dowd's 'The London Eye Mystery', where students are placed into differentiated groups and asked to complete witness statements, collect evidence, make a missing person's poster and prepare to feedback to the rest of the class on their findings.

This is a rework of another resource (can't remember where it's from but am sharing for free). It has a greater focus on British Values, democracy etc, which might tick some boxes for observations/inspections! The resources could form part of a longer activity, where students prepare their evidence when putting George on trial for the murder of Lennie. There are stimulus materials for for the Defense team and the Prosecution.

Created for the new English Literature, AQA A Level Specification A, this PowerPoint includes a range of discussion questions and activities, guiding students to compare Du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’ with the pre-1900 section of poems from the AQA Anthology. Designed for AQA AS Spec A ( from 2015) this resource includes a comparison table with some shared themes between the novels and also a selection of possible questions for this exam. The questions are on A3 and are designed for students to mind-map their answers together in pairs and small groups. They could do this with the Assessment Objectives in mind and then use their notes as essay plans.

Designed with GCSE AQA New Specification in mind, but could be used with key stage 3 or with other specs/exam boards. This lesson gets students to explore the idea of ‘Fan Fiction’ and to create their own example based on their own reading. This worked well with avid readers and higher ability. Could be used as an introduction to writing a narrative and creative writing techniques.

Using the events from the opening of Pullman's novel, the activity gets students to consider newspaper articles taken from 1872 in terms of language and style. It leads to a creative piece, where students create their own newspaper. An hour long lesson.
