I recently used this lesson for a mixed ability KS3 class. Pupils will learn about the storming of the Bastille during the French Revolution. The main task is literacy relay where pupils will work in teams to answer the questions related to the different interpretations of the Storming of the Bastille. Pupils are then to form a judgment regarding which sides' story of events they trust more, either Historian's version of events of that of the 3rd Estate. Pupils will then answer their leveled judgment question. I have also included a modern day link to how Bastille day is celebrated today along with an opportunity to learn beyond. Videos are embedded into the presentation, however I have also provided the links for these as well. Differentiation though outcome and a peep sheet to help with the main task. SMSC question included to encourage further discussion points. Many thanks.

The Rise of Hitler: The Reichstag Fire.

Hook starter: As pupils enter the room the presentation will display an autonomously moving spot light to reveal a picture clue of a raging fire to hint about the context of the lesson. Learning Intention and differentiated outcomes (SMSC). The lesson starts by covering the bigger picture. Pupils will watch a short 10 minute video explain what The Reichstag Fire was and the theories surrounding it. Pupils' will then work in teams and study evidence packs to sort the different views regarding who started the fire. Pupils then combine with like minded pupils to explain (using the evidence) their overall opinion. Pupils explain how the different parts of the Enabling Act helped Hitler consolidate his power. Pupil's then consolidate their judgment through answering a structured 8 mark exam style question. If time I then ask my pupils to peer assess with WW / EBI. This was graded an ‘outstanding’ lesson. Hook starter: As pupils enter the room the presentation will display an autonomously moving spot light to reveal a picture clue of the London Blitz to hint about the context of the lesson. Lesson Intention and differentiated outcomes. (SMSC) Video links are included within the presentation. This lesson could be used without the need for exercise books as it is a learning stations based lesson for the most part. I have included 5 stations however these could be less / more dependent upon size and ability of your class. Eg: 1. War time memories / experience of the Blitz. 2. Propaganda posters (Blackout and recruitment to help during air raids). 3. Anderson / Morrision shelters. 4. Text book / war time newspapers 5. Interactive station (War time house / Interactive Air Raid map). Pupil’s then consolidate their judgment through answering a structured 8 mark exam style question. This lesson has been designed for the GCSE Edexcel New Scheme (1-9) All outcomes are linked with Paper One’s Assessment Objectives 1 & 2. This lesson focuses upon the significance of Fleming, Florey & Chain, allowing pupils to judge who provided the most significant contribution to its discovery. The aim of this lesson is to judge the impact of penicillin upon British medicine overall. This can be consolidated in an exam style question (WAGOL provided). This lesson has been designed for the GCSE Edexcel Medicine Through Time module. All outcomes are linked with Paper One’s Assessment Objectives 1-2-3. The purpose of this lesson is to inform pupils about the ‘Chain on Evacuation’ on the Western Front. Pupils will study the role of the RAMC & FANY within this process from Regimental Aid Posts to the Base Hospital. To further extend pupils understanding I have included a role play card sort activity. The video is embedded (Link provided). Pupils consolidate their learning by applying their knowledge to an exam style question (Success criteria and differentiated help sheets included). You will need the Edexcel Medicine Through Time Textbook for part of this lesson.

The focus of this lesson is to build upon the Aims & the structure of the LON and fits into the bigger picture of ‘To What Extent Was The League of Nations a Success’? The lesson’s purpose is to introduce the league’s failures in the 1920’s and to judge the most significant through a series of student led and source evaluation (less teacher talk) tasks. **Hook: **students are handed hook sheet as they enter to instantly complete focusing around recalling 5 key facts about the successes of the LON. Teacher introduces the lessons intention. **Starter: ** After watching an introduction video about the League in the 1920s failures (summary video) (embedded into the PP) Students then answer a series of quick fire questions about the views people had of its structure and failures / flaws. Main task 1: Student competition task: Teacher to display the success on the board and students to remember as many as they can to then fill in their map sheet. OR card sort and cut up the failures and students handed one each to become an expert in and complete the relevant section of their map sheet. Students then mix pair share to help each other complete their entire sheet. Main Task 1 (optional): Students could then to arrange their card sort of failures into an arrow of significance and to form a judgment on the most significant failure. Main task 2: Students to apply their acquired knowledge to source evaluation and exam technique through using a ‘layers of inference’ sheet to support weaker learners. Students then answer their exam style question and peer assess (proforma included). Plenary: Students break into small groups who have selected the same ‘most significant failure’ they coach each other and then nominate a representative to go ‘Head-To-Head’ with another student with a differing opinion to argue out their opinion. Teacher decided on the most convincing / articulate reasoning and awards points. **All videos embedded / descriptions and prompts included in the PP description. **

This pack contains two lessons. Lessons outcomes are: Expected: To study the life of a famous Naval soldier. (SMSC) Challenge: To explain a famous battle at sea, its causes and consequences. Stretch: To use source evidence to support an exam style question. The first lesson consists of a case study regarding Jack Cornwell and his importance to a ‘famous naval battle’. At the age of only 16, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross and was the youngest British to take part in the battle). Pupils will study his story from a cut out card sort activity catagorising information about his life. Pupils then reassemble to card sort into a jigsaw to reveal that he died as a result of the Battle of Jutland. Pupils are then encouraged to complete further research about other British men who fought in the battle (computers will be required of this, otherwise I have set it as a Homework). The second lesson allows pupils to study source evidence (primary and secondary) to help reach the lessons outcomes. Pupils then consolidate the past 2 lessons with an exam style question. Then pupils can use the success criteria to peer assess with WW / EBI to identify areas of improvement regarding their extended writing. The presentation itself is aesthetically pleasing and engaging with lots of colour including moving Giff images. All videos are embedded (links also provided). I highly recommend having an ‘interactive’ station for the second lesson as there is a fantastic website (link included) which allows pupils to listen to first hand accounts of the battle from survivors. The lessons finish with how the Battle is remembered today 100 years on.

The Purpose of this lesson is to conduct an investigation into the events and impact of the Freedom Summer of 1964 and how this led to the introduction of the Civil Rights Act. Lesson begins with a trailer for the film 'Freedom summer' as pupils enter class they will be handed the Louisiana literacy test to take when they sit down. This is a purposefully confusing text to stop black people from registering to vote. Pupils are then introduced to the Mississippi murders though a clip from "Mississippi Burning' embedded - pupils are encouraged to write a series of questions they would like answered about these murders (they will then be able to answer these later in the lesson). Pupils study the original information booklet appealing for volunteers to enrol in the freedom summer before using this to summarise what it was about. (extension activity included here for more-able pupils) Pupils reflect upon a source of evidence to see what they can infer from it about the events of the campaign. After reflecting upon the evidence pupils will try to answer they questions they set themselves about the murders and how this again gained national attention - pupils will reflect upon an audio clip from part of a speech by President Kennedy to then discuss if he supported the Civil Rights Movement. this can then lead the way for introducing the civil rights act of 1964 - pupils are set a homework to reflect upon to what extent it was successful (linked in with GCSE exam criteria) All videos are embedded (links provided) further advice can be found in the description of the presentation.

The aim of this lesson is to introduce the concept of ‘Black Power’ to pupils. The lesson begins with pupils inferring and discussing a source of evidence showing a black man tied down by the non-violent events which has happened so far during the Civil Rights Movement - this leads into the introduction of the need for violence to achieve black peoples aims. Pupils watch a short video on the Mexico Olympics of 1968 to help introduce this – before being introduced to the Black Panthers through a listening activity from an interview with Huey Newton and a study of the Panthers 10-point programme. The main task involves pupils studying a card sort and categorizing the successes and failures of the movement. Pupils could mix - pair - share to help do this or simply working individually or in pairs before forming an overall judgment on the success of the movement. Pupils then consolidate their learning with a short video before answering an exam style balanced answer statement question. The focus of this lesson is to build upon the delicate balance of world powers in the 1930’s with Hitlers Anschluss of Austria in 1938 and fits into the bigger picture of ‘Why had international peace collapsed by 1939’? **Hook: **students are handed hook sheet as they enter to instantly complete focusing around recalling 5 key facts about Hitler’s foreign policy. **Starter: ** students watch a video (optional but embedded) are challenged to suggest why they may be surprised by the message of the interview video. Teacher then links into and introduces the lessons intention. Main task 1: Students are provided with a key information sheet breaking the stages of Anschluss down – students to highlight 3 key features of each stage. Students are then challenged to write a series of questions based on the information to quiz each other about the stages of Anschluss. Students then to meet back at their table and complete their table sheet in more detail. Show consolidation video (embedded). Students then to explain why Hitler was able to achieve Anschluss in 1938. Structure strips and success criteria (MARK Scheme) for differentiation. Plenary: Students to apply their acquired knowledge to an exam style question – structure strips are provided for differentiation and a mark scheme to allow students to peer / self assess their answer afterwards as a plenary. The purpose of this lesson is to enable students to understand how Ford contributed towards the economic growth of the US through developing their understanding of key words and concepts. Hook: As students enter they are challenged with completing an A-Z sheet of how many key words they already associate with the 1920s. Teacher introduces lesson / outcomes. Starter: Teacher then uses the PP to introduce Henry Ford and a bit of his background / famous for. Students can then watch an introductory video (Embedded) and make some initial notes. Teacher introduces the ‘Cycle of Prosperity’, students provided with a blank cycle and are challenged to memorize the completed version on the IWB in 30 seconds (timer included) Students then have 2 minutes to try and complete their blank sheet with as much detail as possible. Link this then to some other major concepts associated with Ford (8 more in total), students to play a memory activity to remember them initially which then flows into a game of taboo - all explained in the PP. Students can then watch another video and tick off where they can spot their newly learned words / concepts whilst watching. Following this students are asked to complete an exam style question to explain the impact ford had being challenged to use as many words as possible, easily adapted structure strips provided for differentiation. Finish with ‘learn beyond the lesson’ option for further stretch and challenge. (Dragons den presentation style activity included also which could be another lesson in itself) Easily enough for 2/3 lessons. This lesson should lead on from recently studying the 'Declaration of the Rights of Man'. Hook starter: As pupils enter the room the presentation will display an autonomously moving spot light to reveal a picture clue about the lesson. Learning Intention and differentiated outcomes (SMSC). Starter: Pupils' receive crime cards to which then then decide individually upon the most fitting punishment this will link in later with the lesson when the guillotine and how it was used during the 'Terror' is explained. Pupils can compare justice and crimes fitting the appropriate punishments. Pupils will consolidate with a video regarding how the Revolution became extreme though the September Massacre as a case study. Pupils' then compete in groups to complete a literacy relay regarding the 'Terror' to increase their knowledge of the events which took place and the main forces involved. Peep sheet has been provided here for differentiation. Pupils then watch a BBC Bitesize video to consolidate before answering a structured 8 mark exam style question.
