A customisable introductory lesson to AO1 (AQA Paper 2, Question 2). Students are asked to infer information about children in Victorian London and Modern London from pictures by John Leech and Banksy (links within the lesson). This is a good lesson for introducing students to the skill of summary and also directing them away from AO3 style answers. 2 non fiction extracts to support students in understanding contextual information about the living conditions in the WW1 trenches and feelings towards the British Government. Each text is accompanied with 9 questions to support comprehension. The text pair also includes English Language Paper 2 style questions: How does the writer use language to describe the suffering of the soldiers? (AO2) Use details from both sources to write a summary of what you understand about the similarities between the living conditions in the trenches. (AO1) Compare how the writers convey their attitudes towards life in the trenches. (AO3) Further questions encourage students to make links between the poem and the ideas raised within the extracts.
