This is an engaging sorting activity on finding the relative extrema of a function with one variable. Students have to find the x-coordinates of the relative extrema of each of 18 functions. They are given four sorting mats where to drag and drop the letters of the functions to sort them according the number of their relative extrema. The first sorting mat is for functions having one maximum and one minimum, the second mat is for functions having only one relative min, the third - for functions with one relative max only and the fourth sorting mat is for functions having infinite many relative maximums and minimums. I have included polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions.
Students can work independently or in groups of 2 or 3.
All answer keys are included.
