A substantial cinema-themed Object-Oriented Programming project for A-Level Computer Science, designed to develop students’ confidence with classes, objects, methods and larger program structures.

In this project, students build a software model of a cinema. The cinema contains multiple screens, each with different film showings and a fixed number of seats. Customers can book adult or child tickets, choose seats, and the program can generate seating charts showing which seats are available or occupied.

The project is ideal for helping students move beyond small OOP exercises and start working with multiple interacting classes in a realistic programming scenario.

The resource package includes:
• Full student instructions and project specification
• Starter code
• Test code
• A possible completed solution

The project specification gives students clear requirements for the properties and methods that each class should contain. For example, the Screen class stores information such as the screen number, number of rows, seats per row and the list of showings.

The project develops a wide range of important programming skills, including:

• Object-Oriented Programming
• Classes and objects
• Attributes and methods
• Constructors
• Constants
• Object composition
• Lists and other data structures
• Two-dimensional seating structures
• Searching
• Selection and iteration
• Boolean values
• Date and time handling
• Validation and availability checking
• Calculations using numerical data
• Testing and debugging
• Translating a written specification into working code

Students are also required to integrate their code with a supplied CinemaBusiness class that reads data from a file, calls methods from the students’ Cinema class and outputs a log of activity. This encourages students to work within an existing codebase rather than simply writing an isolated program from scratch.

This resource could be used as:
• An A-Level programming project
• A structured OOP consolidation activity
• An introduction to larger multi-class programs
• Independent programming practice
• Homework or extension work
• An end-of-topic assessment
• Preparation for programming questions in A-Level examinations
• A project for developing problem-solving and debugging skills

The cinema scenario gives students a meaningful context for applying OOP techniques, with plenty of opportunities to work with interacting objects, data structures and realistic program logic.

Suitable for A-Level Computer Science students studying Object-Oriented Programming, including those following AQA, OCR or other UK specifications.

A substantial and engaging programming challenge that helps students develop the confidence needed to design, implement, test and debug larger Object-Oriented programs.
