Extracting Piecewise-Defined Functions
from Graphs
United States, UK, and International Curricula
Grade 10–12
Curriculum Alignment: United States (CCSS HSF-IF.C.7.b),
UK (A-Level Mathematics and AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics), and International Baccalaureate (IB DP Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation
(AI)).
Learning Objective: Determine the equations and domain restrictions of piecewise-defined functions from their graphs on a
coordinate grid.
Learning Strategy: For each graph, identify its shape, select
an appropriate algebraic model, extract useful coordinates, determine unknown coefficients, verify the equation, and then use the end point symbols to establish the domain
