A complete lesson that asks students to brainstorm the features of their own identity and to rank them in order of importance. Students are then asked to discuss and account for the different number of “countries” listed by the UN, FIFA and the International Olympic Committee. Students then use a provided list of “non-countries” and they conduct basic research of one territory and produce a one-page written task that explains why their chosen territory does not fulfull the criteria to be a country. This provides links to and review of the previous lesson. Selected students then read their findings aloud and the class discusses if there are any common features of “non-countries”.
