Initial Sounds Phonics Assessment

This complete pack of phonics assessment cards is ideal for assessing phonics knowledge and phonemic understanding in EYFS, SEND and KS1.
The resource includes 14 sheets – 7 in colour and 7 matching black-and-white versions.
Sounds are organised into groups of 3 or 4, such as s, a, t, p / h, b, f, l and x, y, z.
Each sheet includes picture cards and corresponding letter cards, allowing teachers to assess children’s ability to recognise sounds, identify initial sounds in words and match pictures to the correct letters.
This versatile resource can be used for individual assessments, small-group activities or independent learning tasks.
There are lots of ways to use these cards! Children can name the pictures, identify their initial sounds and sort them alongside the matching letter cards.
The black-and-white worksheets are perfect for children to write the correct initial sound next to each picture, colour the pictures, then cut, sort and stick them into their books as evidence of learning.
Alternatively, the colour cards can be cut out and laminated to create reusable phonics sorting games.
These activities provide teachers with a useful insight into each child’s phonics knowledge, sound recognition and phonemic awareness, helping to identify areas of confidence and sounds that may need further practice.
