Fun with frogs and data handling at KS1. The lesson starts with children looking at the colour poster of 18 frogs all wearing different hats. Children observe carefully looking at the frogs eye colour and types of head wear. Sheet 2 asks children to count and record e.g. number of frogs with brown eyes/party hats/work hats. There are 5 questions to answer. Sheet 3 is for children to draw a hat on each of the frogs and label them. Sheet 4 shows frogs in different positions or activities. Children colour the matching frogs to make them the same. Sheet 5 shows 2 writing frames for children to write about frogs or their findings of the data handling activities.

Encourage the children to come up with a starter sentence to improve their lists such as - I love sports, any sport will do… Celebrate World Poetry Day and have fun with these List Poetry ideas. Here is a good way to introduce children to Limericks as part of World Poetry Day or any poetry topic. There is an example of a completed limerick showing visual images. There are 2 other limericks where the rhyming words need filling in. Children use the visual images and words to help them. Once the children are familiar with the structure of a limerick, they can use the template page to start to make up their own limericks. Notes: Limericks are traditionally 5 lines and often with a funny final line or a twist. The first, second and last line usually have the same rhyme and the third and fourth often share a different rhyme.

This is an animated PPT with 2 activity sheets as a follow up. Jo wants a new dog and is viewing them on ‘Zoom’! There are 20 dogs to choose from. Children watch the PPT and help Jo to decide on a dog they feel would be suitable. The slides are animated so the children will delight in watching the dogs on the TV, There are lots of details too on the slides for children to talk about and spot in the other slides. Some of these are animated also. The activity sheets are at the back: A writing frame for children to write their choice for Jo and their personal choice. They then draw these dogs. All 20 dog pictures - can children recall their names and write them underneath the pictures? You could also cut these out and laminate them and children can find the pictures to go with the slides as you go along. Extension activities include data handling - how many children chose the same or different dogs? How many children have pets?
