This art unit is a brilliant way to introduce children to the essential drawing skills of mark making, sketching and key art terms.

Children will complete a range of sketching activities using a range of different drawing tools, which will give the basis for fantastic art skills throughout the year.

Children will also build their understanding of key vocabulary, such as pressure, cross-hatching, texture, monochrome, contrast, density, stippling and more.

These lessons can be used in Year 1, Year 2 or a mixed Year One and Year Two class.

Lesson 1 LO: To be able to make marks using a variety of tools.
Success Criteria: I can hold a pencil correctly. I can make a range of marks. I can name the tools used.

Lesson 2 LO: To be able to organise and arrange marks according to techniques used.
Success Criteria: I can make a wide range of marks on a variety of surfaces by exploring the materials provided. I can talk about marks made and make a similar mark if asked to. I can share ideas and word with others.

Lesson 3 LO: To be able to apply my knowledge of mark making.
Success Criteria: I can apply my knowledge of mark making. I can recognise that certain materials produce specific effects. I can identify marks and talk about them using vocabulary I have learnt.

Lesson 4 LO: To be able to create a variety of effects using mark making and surfaces.
Success Criteria: I can explore a range of mark making techniques using a variety of materials. I can hold drawing tools correctly. I can use appropriate vocabulary to describe materials and mark making. I can identify the materials I have used.

Lesson 5 LO: To be able to use music and movement to inspire mark making.
Success Criteria: I can select tools and materials to make specific choices about marks. I can identify where marks change in response to a change in music

Lesson 6 LO: To understand how to show texture and movement by using different marks.
Success Criteria: I can apply knowledge of mark making to identify specific marks and materials that would be appropriate for a task. I can demonstrate a greater understanding of a range of drawing materials. I understand that drawing is a response to a thought or an idea created by a point of inspiration.
