In this unit, children will explore weaving using a range of materials, learning the key skills of warping, interlocking patterns, finishing and embroidery. They will learn about wool and it’s history in Britain whilst building up a landscape composition that features a background and foreground whilst playing with thickness and texture. They will study a range of landscape artists including David Hockney, Peter Doig, Peter Lanyon, JMW Turner, John Wootton and Moses Swett.

Each lesson has a detailed lesson plan, PowerPoint and accompanying resources.

  1. Explore ideas for a mixed media artwork based on landscape.
    Take photos of suitable natural scenes.
    Prepare and design a fabric landscape.

  2. Describe the weaving process using the correct terms.
    Make a simple weaving using a wool, thread and hessian.
    Evaluate finished work.

  3. Warp up a loom.
    Practise weaving on a loom.
    Describe how to alternate warp threads in order to fix weaving.

  4. Practise different weaving techniques.
    Create a landscape scene made from textiles.
    Reflect on work in progress and suggest how it can be adapted.

  5. To investigate techniques which use textiles creatively.
    To practise weaving with fabric strips.
    To recycle clothes to create a rag rug
