To start students are to look at a photograph and decide what happened next? This photograph was taken as a bride was walking towards the church so that she could get married. The date was the 12th May 2008 and minutes later there was an earthquake. Students are to then watch the short video clip about an earthquake in China and think about how would you feel if you were there at the time. The main body of the lesson is to complete a mystery looking at reasons "Why did Chow die in the China Earthquake?" Students are to sort through the cards to find out why he died and record the information on their worksheets. Students are then to complete an exam question explaining the effects of an earthquake on the people and the environment. Model exam questions are on the PowerPoint to show students how to answer the question and there is an exam question they could mark. If students have time they could peer mark the question using the mark scheme or this could be done as an activity in the next lesson. Finally students decided how could China could reduce the effects of an earthquake in the future - students write their names on a post it and place it on the board.
