Expanded addition of pairs of three-digit addition is revised, and children are asked to approximate first. They are also asked to sort additions into those whose totals they think will be less than 500 or more than 500, then less than 1000 or more than 1000 and find additions which will have answer within an given range. Children use expanded addition to add pairs of three-digit prices, and then sort others according to whether they think their totals will be more ore less than £10. They are then give a variety of three-digit additions and asked to sort them according to whether they would work them out purely mentally, mentally using jottings or using expanded addition.
