“More Than Headlines” is a thoughtful, deliberately understated Refugee Week assembly designed for students in Years 7–13.

Rather than focusing on statistics or political debate, the assembly explores the ordinary lives that exist before people become headlines. Through carefully structured visuals, silence, messaging sequences and minimal narration, students are encouraged to think about identity, media language and the human reality behind the word “refugee.”

The assembly is calm, emotionally intelligent and deliberately restrained in tone. It is designed to provoke reflection rather than deliver a lecture, making it suitable for whole-school delivery, tutor groups or year assemblies. The resource also includes detailed teacher notes with suggested timings, delivery guidance and slide-by-slide explanations.

Included:
Full assembly PowerPoint
Detailed teacher notes
Suggested timings and delivery guidance

Approximate assembly length: 15–18 minutes.

Looking for follow-up activities? A companion bundle version of this resource is also available including One Bag, a quiet tutor time reflection, and The Headline Rewrite, a media literacy task for KS4 and KS5. These activities are designed to help students continue exploring the themes of identity, headlines and perception after the assembly. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/-13466385
