Challenge primary learners to explore bridge design, support, and strength with this hands-on STEM bundle. Learners investigate how different materials affect bridge performance while building, testing, improving, and comparing designs. This practical KS1 STEM bundle combines engineering, testing, measurement, and problem-solving through six engaging bridge-building activities.

• Problem-solving and critical thinking
• Testing and improving designs
• Recording and comparing results
• Structure and support STEM learning
• Measurement and data collection
HOW IT WORKS:
Learners build bridges using six different materials and test how many coins each bridge can hold across a 6-inch gap. After recording results, they improve one part of the design, carry out a second test, and compare outcomes. Each challenge introduces a different engineering concept:
• Newspaper Bridge – tubes and supports
• Mini Marshmallow Bridge – joints and connections
• Craft Stick Bridge – beams and reinforcement
• Cardboard Bridge – folding, layering, and reinforcement
• Index Card Bridge – arches, folds, and tubes
• Straw Bridge – trusses and supports
The recording structure provides space for planning, sketches, building notes, and result comparisons.
DIFFERENTIATION: Designed for KS1 learners and extends naturally for KS2 through deeper investigation and comparison. Supports EAL learners through simple language, visual structure, and hands-on tasks.
PRINTING & PREP:
• Print pages single-sided
• Provide challenge materials as listed in each activity
• Use a stable testing surface
• Set up a clear testing area
• Use scissors carefully. Keep coins, toothpicks, and small pieces away from young children.
