These are three lessons plans and power points for solving quadratic equations by factorisation:
lesson 1: solving standard quadratic equation by factorisation
lesson 2: factorising quadratic expressions (this in fact is slightly harder than solving standard quadratics)
lesson 3: solving non-standard quadratic equations by factorisation
The lessons focus on a 'short' factorisation method (one-line method, for equations with arbitrary x squared coefficient ). Given the amount of quadratic equations students need to do, having a faster method at hand could be useful. A proof of why the 'short' method works is given at the end of lesson 1.
In lesson 1, I also talk about when the product is positive, looking for two numbers which adds to the sum S, and when the product is negative, looking for two numbers whose difference is the sum S. This is only to help the less able students to determine what to look for, when trying to find the two numbers for the factorisation.
The lessons are designed for AS revision of quadratics, and recommended to be taught in that order. The bundle contains both the lesson presentations with 'overlay animations', where steps are reviewed one at a time. There is also an accompanying presenter view pdf for teachers for each lesson ppt. The documents are prepared meticulously with LaTeX, I hope you find these useful.
