Nucleic Acids Lesson 2.2 DNA Replication AQA A level biology specification. This resource provides an entire lesson plan (PowerPoint) including engaging activities to achieve the following learning objectives:

  1. Describe the events that take place during DNA replication
  2. Describe the formation of a new polynucleotide strand
  3. Explain the semi-conservative process of DNA replication

The activities include:

  1. A genetics quiz with clues;
  2. Detailed information slides illustrating DNA replication, semi-conservative replication, the role of DNA polymerase and helicase leading to an activity to use the key terms to describe the process of DNA Replication - higher level students will be able to do this however there is an alternative Activity 4 (below) for lower level students;
  3. A model answer follows allowing students to peer or self-assess their work;
  4. An ordering task to number the steps 1-15 of DNA replication - this can be used as a differentiated task for students that find the previous task challenging
  5. A gap-fill activity;
  6. A data interpretation and nucleotide structure practice exam questions;
  7. A mark scheme follows for peer or self-assessment by students;
  8. Mini-plenary - 4 pics one word “semi-conservative replication”
  9. Culminating in levelled learning objectives where students can assess their grade
