PowerPoint and worksheet made for my Y7 classes on the difference between simple, compound and complex sentences using gothic examples. It could also be used for KS2 or lower ability Y8, and is great for cover lessons. There are opportunities for mini-whiteboard activities to check for understanding.
The worksheet has 3 parts:
- Identify if the sentence is simple, compound or complex
- Expand the simple sentence to turn it into a compound sentence using FANBOYS conjunctions
- Rewrite the complex sentence by moving the subordinate clause from the end to the beginning (and adding in commas)
Finally there is an activity for students to rewrite a gothic story extract using a variety of sentence structures for effect.
Ideal as a standalone SPAG lesson or two (it took my Y7 classes 2 x 1hr lessons to complete, and not all got onto the last activity!), for EBI work to improve creative writing, and also great for cover as very self-explanatory for non-specialists!
