The aim of this lesson is to investigate whether the Blitz Spirit really existed during the Second World War and evaluate how far the British people remained united under the bombing campaign.
Students begin by exploring the impact of the Blitz through archive film footage, government broadcasts and contemporary historical sources. They investigate the scale of the German bombing campaign and examine how ordinary people experienced air raids across Britain’s towns and cities.
Using a Thinking Quilt and a range of contextual evidence, students develop an understanding of the effects of the Blitz on civilian life, including evacuation, shelters, casualties, morale and government responses.
They then analyse a variety of historical sources, photographs and statistics to decide whether the Government’s portrayal of a united and determined nation accurately reflected reality.
Students evaluate the reliability and usefulness of the evidence before reaching a supported judgement on whether there really was a Blitz Spirit or whether this was largely the result of wartime propaganda.
The lesson concludes with an engaging ‘Would I Lie to You?’ plenary, challenging students to distinguish between fact and myth while reinforcing their understanding of life on the British Home Front.
This lesson provides an excellent foundation for GCSE History, developing students’ skills in historical enquiry, source analysis, interpretation, evaluation and significance.
