Firstly the students will play the game against the computer and they will need to work out what strategy the computer uses to win, you can print this sheet out and they can play in pairs with counters.
You then look at the area of tilted squares and find the two ways you can calculate the area.
I have added a table that can be filed in so you can derive a general formula for and 1up tilted square, this will generally take a lesson, you can extend it to be any tilted square.
