This unit should give pupils a strong understanding of modern day Africa. Pupils will investigate the human and physical geography of Africa by naming and describing a number of countries as well as describing how climate negatively affects different countries. Pupils will learn how challenges such as drought, desertification, malaria, Ebola and conflict have slowed many African countries economic development. But they will also learn how countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan and Lesotho are overcoming challenges to improve people’s quality of life. By the end of the unit, pupils should be able to give a balanced argument about whether Africa is a continent of opportunity or despair.

Whole topic including 23 lessons. This unit has 4 planned assessents with mark schemes. The end of unit assessment answers the overall question. There is also an oppertunity to look at Nigera as a virtual fieldtrip.
