Introduction to the John Muir award & UK National Parks

Introduction to the John Muir award & UK National Parks

This power point resource is designed to introduce the John Muir award and National Parks to SEN learners who are working at entry level. The presentation provides three group activities, lots of opportunity for group discussion and assessment through questioning. There is another word document attached which contains the images, sentences and logos required, in order to make the practical activities work. Learning Objectives: To enhance team work skills. To establish the key facts about John Muir. To gain an understanding of the John Muir Award. To identify key features, benefits and locations of National Parks. Practical task delivery: Assessment task 1 / The four sections of the award. A group discussion takes place around the meanings of the words: Discover, Explore, Protect/Conserve and Share. Groups are provided with 8 sentences which they must put under the headings they are describing, within a time frame. Group discussion and marking. Assessment task 2/ Identifying National Parks A group discussion takes place around the key features of a National Park. Groups are provided with 8 images which they must identify as either being a National Park or not, withing a set time frame. Group discussion and marking. Task 3/ Locations of National Parks - Active learning relay race Provide a National Park map to a group (I used groups of three). Put 15 logos on the other side of the room. Identify roles ie students who are running and students who are sticking. The runner collects, the sticker puts it in place and the next runner goes when this is done, the winning group is first to complete. *To cater for lower level learners I cut the logos into different shapes and drew a fine line next to the park on the map so they could match up the two. Other methods could include numbering the parks and logos, or words with blanks on the map and answers on the other side of the room to improve literacy. Either way there will be a bit of cutting out to do! I advise printing the map in A3.

Winter Olympics 2018 Lesson/Assembly Presentation

Winter Olympics 2018 Lesson/Assembly Presentation

If you want some extra information about the 2018 Winter Olympics then go through this interesting interactive PowerPoint presentation, It takes you through the different event categories; why the emblem was the way it was; and why there was a white cat with stripes. This presentation is not only informative, it has links to 24 short videos that show top athletes performing in each of the sports. If they watched the Winter Games, your students will probably tell which videos to show. Some of these videos are amazing . We watched our greatest medal hope, Elise Christie, succumb to the perils of Short-Track Speed Skating, but have you seen when it worked in favour of Steven Bradbury when he 'won' his unbelievable Gold Medal win in the 2002 Olympics – it really was a matter of Last Man Standing! The topics covered within the presentation include: Location and dates, Venues and the stadiums The emblems and mascots The events and their pictograms. Note that the presentation contains interactive buttons which allow you to jump to different parts of the presentation and then return. My recommendation is that you go through the presentation slide by slide until you get to the information on the venues. From here, I recommend that you select the particular sports that take your interest. If you have a live Internet connection, then watch some of the videos – especially the ones that I’ve labelled with 5-stars. If you like this presentation then please leave a review.

IB Learner Profiles PE Display

IB Learner Profiles PE Display

PE specific posters of the IB Learner Profiles to place on your gym wall. I used these to great effect in my lesson plenaries, asking children to sit under a learner profile which they had exhibited in the lesson, and getting them to explain why/how. The pictures are probably a little outdated now, as I made this resource in 2011. They are from Google Images also, so not mine. Feel free to update and change them to your own, or keep them the same!
