The World News Crossword - August 12th, 2018

The World News Crossword - August 12th, 2018 is a 6-page PDF document made up of 4 puzzles based on the events of last week’s news. It’s a quick and simple process to download the resource and it can be stored on a flash drive ready for printing. The World. News Crossword puzzle usually takes a class about 30-45 minutes to complete, leaving some time for discussion on some of the more interesting news stories. The puzzle seems to work best when done in pairs or small groups, to generate discussion. The goal of course is to have students learning more about the world around them, and to prompt them to ask questions, especially ‘why…?’ All for just £2. What’s in this week’s document? (1) A crossword based on the events of last week’s news, (2) A crossword about Burkina Faso because it was in the news last week because of a malaria/bed-net trial that appears to have reduced the infection rate of malaria by 12%, (3) A crossword all about Climate Change, because it’s always in the news despite what Australia’s agriculture minister said, (3) And a crossword about Julius Caesar that can be shared with an English teacher. It’s included because in last week’s news there was a bit of a performance in front of the Trevi Fountain in Rome. All for just £2. So what happened last week? Australia’s agriculture minister said that the drought affecting almost all of Australia has nothing to do with man-made climate change. Excessive monsoon rain caused deaths, wide-spread displacement, and property damage in Kerala. The Swiss government announced measures to help farmers affected by the drought which has been caused by the heatwave in Europe. Two trucks crashed on the highway near Bologna in Italy, a plane crashed near Seattle, and another plane crashed in Indonesia - and a 12 year old boy survived. There was a magnitude 6.2 aftershock near Lombok Island, also in Indonesia. Brazil closed its border to Venezuelans. Singapore trialled eye-scans at its border. And speaking of borders, it seems (based on surveys) that at least 100 constituencies in Britain that previously voted to leave the EU would now vote to remain in the EU. A German man called the police because he was being chased by a baby squirrel. (Tyranny comes in many forms.) In France, crows were trained to collect cigarette butts and exchange them for food. And Christopher Robin was banned from China (the movie, not the boy) - something to do with Winnie the Pooh. All that (and three bonus puzzles) for just £2.

200 English Conversation Cards

200 English Conversation Cards

This pack of 200 conversation prompt cards and supporting activities was my go-to resource when teaching English as a Foreign Language. They’re awesome for milling activities, providing scaffolding, and building speaking confidence. Not only do they make a great warmer for English, EAL, and ESL classes, but they can also be used to improve follow-up question skills and develop relationships between students and teachers. The cards feature starter questions, statements, and actions, and are split into eight, color-coded categories. Each category has ‘easier’ prompts (silver star cards) and ‘more difficult’ prompts (gold star cards). Detailed step-by-step instructions for 5 main activities and 1 extension activity are also provided. *** These are all different cards than in the 64-card Conversation Card Starter Pack. *** The cards are provided in .pdf format inside a zip file. THE 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL SENT ON A 'DAY-TRIP' TO AUSTRALIA

THE 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL SENT ON A 'DAY-TRIP' TO AUSTRALIA

This was an article originally found on the BBC, however, I have edited and changed the text a little to make it easier for non-native English speakers. I have added footnotes with the French translations. You could easily edit this to change to the appropriate language or simply delete the footnotes. This is accompanied by comprehension questions and a true or false activity that I created to check understanding of the article. This also goes with a flipchart I created on the early history of Australia which can be purchased on my page. My students really enjoyed reading this text as they were curious about the plight of Pamela and felt really sorry for her and what she, along with other unfortunate children, had to go through. Any feedback regarding how I have created the questions would be great!

AUSTRALIA - A NATION SHAPED BY BRITISH EMIGRATION

AUSTRALIA - A NATION SHAPED BY BRITISH EMIGRATION

I created this as part of my Australia scheme of work. In my school one class a week (55 minute lesson) is dedicated to Australia and this was an article from the BBC that I edited to make a bit shorter and a little easier. The text is still quite difficult though, so not for low ability classes! My students’ level is approximately B1-B2. Later I am going to upload more powerpoints on all things Australia. I created my own true or false and comprehension questions to go along with the text. I have also created footnotes with French translations for some difficult words; however, you could simply edit these words to the appropriate language or just delete the footnotes! Any feedback appreciated.

A basic guide to The Commonwealth (2018)

A basic guide to The Commonwealth (2018)

This is an introduction to The Commonwealth. It was originally created for middle school students in France with a level of approxinately B1. So I have purposely made the language quite simple. It has been updated for 2018: with the inclusion of The Gambia returning after leaving and the news that Prince Charles will be taking over The Queen as head (when she dies). I have created a Powerpoint for the teacher to be shown on the overhead projector, one to be printed out to give to the students with fewer slides (optional). I usually choose the option 4 slides per page when printing, so I don’t print out too many pages. There is also an activity to answer questions on the powerpoint which could be started in class then finished for homework, then a class test to be done on a different day. If you prefer you can skip the **each one, teach one **activity.

The World News Crossword - July 22nd, 2018

The World News Crossword - July 22nd, 2018 is a 6-page PDF document made up of 4 puzzles based on the events of last week’s news. What’s in this week’s document? (1) A crossword based on the events of last week’s news, (2) A crossword all about Japan (which signed a free trade agreement with the EU and also experienced a devastating heatwave), (3) A crossword all about Libya (which closed its border with Tunisia and also did not approve the EU proposals to set up a refugee/migrant processing centre - did you know Libya has no permanent rivers?) and (3) A crossword all about Mother Teresa, whose orphanages in India were being inspected by authorities after accusations that staff had sold babies for adoption. (This puzzle is taken from our soon-to-be-released book, ‘Women who changed the world’.) **What happened in last week’s news? ** The EU fined Google for being very naughty and also signed a free trade agreement with Japan making trade easier. Libya closed its border with Tunisia, making trade impossible. Tourists were hurt by falling lava in Hawaii. Others drowned when their tour boat capsized in Missouri. China’s President went to Africa and the first commercial flight between Eritrea and Ethiopia occurred. Two Dutch men were arrested when they were caught on a boat with 2 tonnes of cocaine in the English Channel and French man was released from an Indonesian prison after 18 years for drug-smuggling. It turns out that Omega-3 won’t keep us safe from strokes and heart attacks, Cristiano Ronaldo is moving to Italy, and New Zealand beat France in the women’s rugby sevens world cup final.
