A PowerPoint (pptx) presentation that asks questions about types of data (primary/secondary, qualitative/quantitative) and data collection techniques including types of sampling. It also briefly looks at how different types of data can be represented in bar charts, frequency diagrams and histograms. A worksheet (pdf/docx) on collecting data where students match types of data to keywords such as primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative, discrete and continuous. A Match-up activity (pdf/docx) on sampling methods, where students match the method with its description and some advantages and disadvantages of the technique. Includes an answer sheet. A worksheet (pdf/docx) about surveys showing 7 different survey questions. Students are asked for one criticism of each question and to rewrite it in a more suitable form. A worksheet (pdf/docx) about representing data containing 5 questions. This is a good revision exercise to remind students of the variety of graphs they already know how to draw.

#### Gordon the Gamekeeper - Maths on the Moor

Gordon the Gamekeeper has been conducting a study on the effect of predators to the Lapwing population on two Northern moors. Lapwings are ground-nesting birds which are in serious decline. One possible factor for this decline in moorland areas is thought to be the predation of nesting birds, eggs and chicks by foxes and crows. To test this hypothesis an experiment was undertaken in Northumberland from 2002 to 2007. Two plots of moorland, each about 1,200 hectares, were selected, one in Otterburn, the other in Bellshiel. For the three years 2002-2004, the predators were removed on the Otterburn plot but left alone on Bellshiel. For the following three years, 2005-2007, the strategy was reversed: predators were removed from the Bellshiel plot but left alone at Otterburn. The data collected is real-world data from which can be explored to prove or disprove the theory that removing predators improves the breeding success of Lapwings. This resource asks the students to prove the theory using maths and logic. The answers are also provided. The questions allow for discussion around a real world example of how the countryside works, especially the interaction between species and the affect they have on each other. Furthermore it demonstrates how Gamekeepers can help to maintain the balance of nature for the benefit of all.

#### KS1 World Cup 2018 Maths Activity

I made this resource for my mixed age year 1/2 class as a whole class maths investigation and they loved it. The World Cup group tables are shown with the scores during the group stage. The children are given a table to complete to find out the points gained for each team in each group. I sorted the children into mixed age pairs and they had to work out the points gained for each team in a particular group. They then had to rank the teams 1st - 4th. My highers worked out the goal differences for Groups B and H as the results were tied. We then made a quick flag for the two successful teams in each group and acted out the 16 play offs to find out who was now in the quarter final. Makes a good display too. I found it quicker to make resource in powerpoint and then print off the slides as the worksheets. Bit rough and ready but it worked. I hope someone else finds this useful!

#### Venn Diagrams

This was delivered to a low ability year 10 class. It is quite basic and missing some of the more complicated concepts dealing with Venn diagrams. This is a PowerPoint intent on explaining how to fill a Venn Diagram with examples. I tried to include the important things to include when completing a Venn diagram. There are some generic questions contained within the slides. Slides 1-7 were seen on lesson 1 and then I gave the class examples of this type. Slides 8-18 were seen in lesson 2 (after recapping the previous slides) and further examples of this type were given to the class. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as this is my first resource I have uploaded.

#### How Many Animals? - Count and Graph!

**Early Stage 1 - Mathematics - Data ** **Outcomes Addressed: ** MAe-17SP: represents data and interprets data displays made from objects. MAe-1WM: describes mathematical situations using everyday language, actions, materials and informal recordings. MAe-3WM: uses concrete materials and/or pictorial representations to support conclusions. I created this worksheet and used it during my Kindergarten placement. Students were able to work through it independently and was their first attempt of collecting and representing data on their own. **Tips: ** Students might like to cover the animals with counters to assist them in counting. Allocate a colour for each animal; students use that colour to circle/group the ‘like-objects’ (animals) so that they can count them clearly.
