Let's buy a house! - A property buying game that practises speaking skills

This is for students who have an intermediate level of English. It is to do with buying houses and is useful for: Learning or revising rooms of the house Discussion classes - “where do you want to live?” Oral practise Role-playing Reviewing large numbers (it might be a good idea to go over this at the start) Critical thinking in a second language It is a very active lesson so is excellent for injecting some fun into your lessons. In order to lead into this activity, I suggest showing students a video of a property buying show to begin with. They seem to have them in every country and every student will get the hang of the game very quickly with this context. Tip: I suggest laminating these resources so you can use them time and time again. You can use as many or as little properties as you like. Instructions: THE OVERALL GOAL IS FOR THE ESTATE AGENTS TO MAKE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE AND THE BUYERS TO SPEND AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE AND FIND THE BEST HOUSE FOR THEIR CHARACTER. Half the class are estate agents, half the class are buyers. Split the houses (cheap/mid-range/expensive) amongst the Estate Agents. Tell them that they want to make as much money as possible, but they can sell the houses for as cheap as they want. Give each buyer a character and a budget (at random). Explain that the characters have to go to each estate agent and try and buy a house for as little money as possible. They have to negotiate (in English of course!) to meet each other halfway. The house has to be suitable for their family, as this will be checked later. It must have enough bedrooms, for example and the houses need to suit the working and school life of the families. When they have reached a deal, the estate agent must write a receipt that the buyer then signs. I have included a receipt that you can use if you so wish. The estate agent also notes down how much money they have made. At the end of the game, when every buyer has found a house, come together and find the winning estate agent: the one with the most money. Then, find the winning buyer: who has bought a house within their budget for their character and how much money did they save? Other students can vote on these. This game took my students around 45 minutes for a class of 15 - and we switched over in the middle (Estate Agents became buyers and vice versa).

CCW Cursive Dotted 1 required. My play Post Office Savings Book promotes counting in 1’s, 2’s and 5’s with practise for writing corresponding numerals, words and simple adds. There is a space for stating and drawing a picture of what the child wants to save for and how much it will cost from ‘pretend 1p to £50’ (also in pretend euros and cents). Great for fine motor when used with play stamps. Alternatively squares can be colored in. Also included is a ‘pretend gift card’ and corresponding receipt to fill out.
