Two Bingo Games based on Prefixes and Suffixes.

Two Bingo Games based on Prefixes and Suffixes.

Each game has a Master Copy that gives you the meanings of the affixes. These affixes are based predominantly on the Schwa sound or consonant or vowel digraphs. Each game has eight different bingo cards. Differentiate as required but it is best to elicit the affixes e.g. “Next is a prefix which means life or living things.” If you need to name the affix you could request a spelling or a word that incorporates the affix. This is a great resource to improve: reading, spelling, ambitious vocabulary; use of: parts of speech, prefixes and suffixes. Bingo as a ten minute plenary helps to revisit the set of affixes covered in the Literacy / Lexicology lesson. For more resources visit my website www.lexicologyforreading.co.uk

Spelling Workout (Ages 8 - 11+) - an active spelling resource

Spelling Workout (Ages 8 - 11+) - an active spelling resource

Each letter of the alphabet coupled with a physical exercise/activity. Poster and instructional videos for each letter/exercise included. Recently I was working on a Closing The Gap project with some focus children in Upper Primary. The aim was to improve spelling ability with given rules. As part of the project I used physical activities to engage the pupils in learning their words. The results were largely positive. After the project was complete I spoke with the children and evaluated the process. They all agreed that doing physical activities to help with their spelling was really fun and engaging. I decided to build on this feedback as I wanted my whole class to have the opportunity to get physical with their spelling, and so Spelling Workout - Workout Spelling was created. A big thank you to my amazing teaching colleagues who demonstrated the physical activities for the videos. What is Spelling Workout - Workout Spelling? Spelling Workout - Workout Spelling designates a different physical exercise/activity for each letter in the alphabet. Pupils can work on their spelling words whilst working up a sweat. There are videos to accompany each letter that demonstrate the exercise/activity required. There are two sets, one aimed at early years (ages 4 - 7) and one for upper primary (ages 8 - 11). There is also a poster included that can be printed for the class or used as a reference sheet / handout. Why Spelling Workout - Workout Spelling? To engage pupils, encourage exercise and to have some fun with spelling. This is quite literally spelling exercise! You can use the alphabet or videos in any way you choose. Make it work for you. Below is just some ideas for class use, if you have any other suggestions please let me know. I’m always looking for ideas! Workouts for weekly spelling words Workouts for spelling out names Brain Breaks Spelling workstations / corners Shout Outs (where a teacher or a pupil lead and shout out letters for classmates to follow in a routine, at the end of the workout fellow pupils can guess the word)

What’s the picture – Segment and blend CVC words</strong> You can assess how well the children segment and blend the CVC words. Select any slide in Slide Show. Ask the children what the picture is. You can prompt them if they are not sure. Get them to say the letters by sounding out and blending. Ask them to write the word on their whiteboards and then show you. You can reveal the answers by clicking on the squares. Alternatively, tell you the children you are going to show them slides of pictures and they have, e.g. a few seconds, to write the letter that corresponds to each phoneme on their whiteboards and then show you on their mini whiteboards. I have also upload a PowerPoint Timer, timed at 2 mins and 5 mins as an option to use. Please see Preview Pane on the words used in this resource. Thank you for your interest.
