This planning synopsis outlines a unit of work on explanation texts for year 4. The plan identifies the focus for each lesson e.g. reading, writing or spoken language, and gives a brief outline of each lesson. A Detailed English Plan to accompany this synopsis can be purchased.
This detailed English plan will support teachers in year 5 deliver an exciting and engaging unit of work based on a text from ‘our literary heritage’. The plan has been carefully crafted to allow children to meet the heightened demands of Curriculum 2014. The plan weaves together the statements from the reading (word reading and comprehension) and writing (transcription, handwriting, composition, VGP and spelling) components of the 2014 curriculum, showing how all of these aspects of learning can be addressed through creative learning experiences. The plan is based on a classic text that allows for exciting opportunities to develop the children’s reading, writing and spoken language.
Core text: Macbeth
A detailed English plan designed to support year 2 pupils reach the Expected Standard in writing plus ready to go resources. The plan incorporates aspects of the year 2 Programme of Study, including reading, writing, spelling and grammar and weaves them together to create engaging reading and writing opportunities. The unit is based on the text, Monsters: An Owner’s Guide by Jonathan Emmett.
This learning sequence focuses on using the language relating to dates, practising the order of days of the week, months and seasons. The language related to ordering events chronologically will also be practised.
HFL maths advisers have mapped and connected the curriculum in each year group term by term. Each half-term is developed with an easy to pick up and use set of sequences with step by step guidance. Examples of how concrete and pictorial representations can benefit pupils’ learning as well as other mastery techniques are included. Ideas to deepen and extend mathematical thinking for all learners, examples of great questions and resources to support pupils’ talk and reasoning are embedded.

The HFL Diagnostic Maths Assessment: End of Year Transition Tool supports with assessment of learning at the end of the academic year to inform transition and autumn term planning as children move to the next year group.
The papers cover the full National Curriculum content for each year group to support teacher assessment judgements and to inform planning for the next academic year. For Year 6 children, this will inform secondary school transition.
‘So what now? I know the gaps, but how and when do I address them?’
The multiple-choice questions have been specifically designed to identify where pupils are making common errors or have specific misconceptions. This will enable teachers to plan for pre-teaching and / or rehearsal by revisiting previously taught content.
Each set of assessment materials for Year 1 to Year 6 in single or mixed age classes contains the following:
Paper 1 – Arithmetic
Paper 2 – Reasoning
Digital markbook with filters and reports to enable forensic gap analysis
Planning and transition guide to precisely inform planning and teaching for the autumn term for the whole class, groups and individuals

The ‘Year 6 Maths SATs analysis toolkit’ provides teachers and subject leaders with resources and analysis tools to identify specific areas of learning strength and development for pupils and classes when using any past SATs papers as practice (2016-2022).
Accompanying the analysis spreadsheets, documents and progress tracker is a digital guidance video that explains each of the resources and how to use them.
There are 5 resources within this SATs analysis toolkit. These resources are:
• KS2 2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2022 Question Level Analysis tools (5 separate Excel documents)
• National Curriculum Coded Domain Referencing Support (PDF)
• Raw and scaled score progress and attainment tracker (Excel)
• SATs Analysis Toolkit Digital Guidance
• SATs Analysis Toolkit Guidance (PDF)
This guidance document aims to support Year 6 teachers and mathematics subject leaders with using the analysis tools to identify both areas of strength and areas of development for Year 6 cohorts following completion of any of the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022 SATs papers.

Develop teacher modelling and children’s mathematical explanations using accurate mathematical language with the HFL Primary Mathematics Vocabulary Index.
Teaching and learning mathematical language is key to developing deep mathematical understanding.
The ability to use words to explain, reason, justify and communicate mathematically is important to help pupils clarify and organise their mathematical schema.

During this sequence, pupils will build on their understanding of area being measured in square units and they will calculate and compare the area of rectangles (including squares) using standard units, square centimetres and square metres. They will use this to calculate area from scale drawings using given measurements and to solve problems. In addition, pupils will develop their ability to estimate the area of irregular shapes.

This is an excellent series of lessons for Year 3, complete with an extensive range of supporting resources. In this learning sequence, pupils will construct and interpret bar charts in variety of contexts and orientation. They will look, firstly, at why bar charts are useful for organising information. They will be encouraged to retrieve information from bar charts, interpret and infer. There is no necessity in the Year 3 curriculum for pupils to draw entire bar charts from tables. Instead, they will focus on completing bar charts with scales provided.

This is an excellent series of lessons for Year 3, complete with an extensive range of supporting resources. This lesson sequence covers National Curriculum objectives:
• Identify horizontal and vertical lines and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines • draw 2-D shapes and make 3-D shapes using modelling materials
• recognise that angles are a property of shape or a description of a turn
• identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn; identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle

This learning sequence links telling the time with several elements of mathematics, including reading scales, counting in multiples of five and fractions. Pupils will develop a physical sense of what a ‘turn’ is before applying this to telling the time on a clock. The focus in this sequence is to achieve a secure understanding of how the clock works, with a later sequence building on this to teach pupils how to draw the hands on a clock.
