Based on the published vocabulary by AQA for the draft German GCSE specification, this lesson includes notes for the teacher to follow. Each of my lessons has a city focus (to create the effect of an overall trip around the German-speaking world by the time they complete their GCSE). The city focus for this lesson on body parts is Vienna. Pupils will learn about narration memory techniques to remember vocabulary after teacher input of the 13 key words listed below for your information. This is followed by a differentiated reading task on Eduard Pernkopf, a Viennese professor who created the Pernkopf Atlas - an accurate book of anatomy in the Nazi era. There are opportunities to draw on core vocab from Y7/8 included e.g. Deutschland/Oesterreich/die Schweiz, Lieblingsspiel. Post pronunciation practice, pupils will be given a character of their choice linked to Vienna to label anatomically in their books. An exciting homework to recreate the board game Operation/Dr Bibber awaits including vocabulary on the Higher specification effectively covering all body parts required on the new GCSE in one - two lessons, depending on the ability of your class. They each have a timer for 10 minutes. They are ordered to fit with the topics covered in Stimmt 1 and cover a range of subjects the students would usually study in Year 7 in the UK. They could easily be reordered. In the notes segment of each slide, you can see the cross-curricular links and the German topic it relates to grammatically/vocabulary wise. These pdf flashcard files are organized into generic vocabulary from the beginning of the vocabulary section in the new AQA specification for German GCSE, as well as Foundation and Higher topics. Rather than the restrictive double-sided flashcard, these are intended to be cut out with their translation attached to them in the first instance. The students or the teacher can then fold the translation behind the vocabulary so that students can test themselves. (The English is upside down intentionally so that it is harder for students to read through the flashcards if you have printed them on paper. In this manner, the vocabulary cards can stand like mini tents on the table and students on either side of the table could complete with each other to see how many words they can correctly translate into the opposite language. The other student is able to easily check the answer by flipping it up the right way. Students then have the opportunity to cut off the translation, mix the topic up and match up the English translations to the German words. all English translations or all German vocabulary could also be removed from the pile. This could lead to students testing themselves on whether or not they truly know the vocabulary required for the new GCSE.
