I am a secondary school English teacher; and have students' progress and interest deep at heart. As a mother of an autistic child, I am forever exploring more ways to engage students of all abilities. I am a firm believer that if their interest is maintained; they engage better and therefore learn better. More importantly, they enjoy the learning... subsequently leading to many happy teachers.

Creative & engaging Year7 SOW based on new EnglishLanguageGCSE - childhood and education theme

(1)
This complete SOW named ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ (ABitW) includes 18 lessons full of engaging activities which will hopefully spark a love for 19th-21st century fiction texts amongst KS3 students. Can be used with year 8s also. Theme running throughout the scheme is childhood, education and growing up. It focuses on the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts (although non fiction texts have not been included) and teaches/tests the new skills required for the new Language GCSE papers. Includes extracts from Roald Dahl’s ‘Boy’, Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’, Charles Dickens’ ‘Oliver Twist’ and includes other authors such as Michael Morpurgo, Laurie Lee, and Daphne du Maurier. It includes a mini assessment half way through to test students’ knowledge on Q3 of the new language paper 1 (based on structure) and a main assessment at the end of the scheme to test on Q4 (To what extent do you agree?) Both assessment extracts are also included as are 2 preparation lessons prior to the mini and main assessments.

Classroom expectations PPT for inital contact with all new secondary classes.

A PPT with a fun game of charades (teachers to adapt their rules; write them out on small pieces of paper and throw them in a little box; ready for the game). This invites students to understand and acknowledge teacher expectations from the start; and vice versa; for students to suggest what they expect from their teacher. Designed for use with secondary (subject specific) teachers; however, can be adapted to suit primary students/teachers also.

Power and Conflict Poetry Cluster Context and Comparison grid activity for New English GCSE

(0)
Based on NEW GCSE LIT2; These 2 resources can be used jointly or individually. One is a context grid which isolates the social and historical contextual background information that year 11 students will need to include in their exam responses in order to achieve higher marks; and the other is a grid which can be blown up onto A3 paper and used as an activity in class for revision or even for initial teaching of the poems. It includes the names of the poets, the titles of the poems and a column for each of the important aspects regarding poetry analysis (MITSL - Meaning, Imagery, Tone, Structure, Language). Also has a column to write in the key quotes of each poem as a means of memorising them for the exam, and lastly has a column to note down which other poems of the cluster each poem can be compared to.

A student friendly revision guide; details what to include in each question of the English papers

This is a handy revision guide for year 11 students and years 9-10 if being taught the GCSE material earlier. It explains to students what they need to include in each question. It specifies the AOs which they need to address and also reminds them roughly of how many paragraphs they need to write. Also reminds them where they need to write about the effect on reader and also which parts of the exam need 'context' (AO3).
