Le tabagisme et le vapotage chez les jeunes

Le tabagisme et le vapotage chez les jeunes

(0)
A lesson on smoking and vaping amongst young people, aimed at higher level, Leaving Cert students. The first document is a sentence builder worksheet. I ask students to work together to translate the key vocab (dictionaries are available to them for this if required). I then mix up the student pairings so that everyone is working with someone new, and ask the students to categorise the vocab into nouns, verbs and adjectives (this helps to prepare them for the ‘trouvez dans le texte’ questions often seen in the comprehensions in LC exams). Once the words have been translated, categorised and corrected, students work alone to translate the sentences on the worksheet from French to English. These sentences can then be used in an opinion piece on this topic. The second document is a text which can be used to further build and enrich vocab, can be used as a reading activity, or as a comprehension. Useful vocab and expressions can be identified and copied into a notes copy or added to the first worksheet for future use in opinion pieces. I find these activities really useful for preparing students for opinion questions or oral questions on these themes. Differentiation can be facilitated through the student pairings. Hot Desert Climate, Desertification & The Aswan Dam Project

1. Hot Desert Climate PPT - A 26 slide PPT with transitions, images and underlined key words. Discusses location of climate type, precipitation, temperature, vegetation and animals. Has some ‘to do’ questions on slide 7/8 based on a graph showing rain and temperature levels. Also discusses desertification. Has a starter slide which explains the key terms associated with the topic. Two links to YouTube clips on the Sahel region (one with Qs) are also included. Slide 25 directs students to their workbook (Geoplanet by EDCO) and the final slide contains two past exam questions (Irish Junior Cert). Also attached is a word document with the most important key terms which could be projected as a lesson starter or could be distributed to the students and they could write the definition in themselves. The PPT uses the Sahel region as a case study and has maps/info on this region within the PPT. Attached is a PDF map which shows very clearly which countries lie within/make up part of the region. Also included is a word document with typed causes, consequences and solutions based on desertification. This should be copied, laminated and each sentence cut up. The students then work in small groups/pairs to categorize each sentence. This is a great starter activity to introduce this section of the desertification topic and will establish students’ prior knowledge. PPT then goes into more detail on the above (causes, consequences and solutions). This can be done after the activity. Last slide is a homework slide based on the textbook I use but can be changed or deleted to suit. 2. Second PPT is a 9 slide presentation on the Aswan Dam and how it acts as a solution to desertification. It contains maps and images, gives a general overview of the Dam and explains the pros and cons associated with the Dam. Final slide is a debate/think-pair-share slide where students are asked to think more about the pros/cons and to discuss whether they would or would not like a dam located near their area.

Grand Corps Malade Study

Three worksheets based on 'Grand Corps Malade. First worksheet is a biography about him and his life. Questions here are in English (to be answered in English). This can be a starter activity to introduce students to the artist. Second Worksheet is based on his song ‘Je viens de la’ and is designed as a cloze test. It also has a short translation activity and a grammar activity too which can be assigned for homework. Third worksheet is adapted from an authentic source (French online newspaper) and questions are in French (to be answered in French). This can be differentiated by changing the questions to English/writing easier questions. Again, this can be done in class or for homework. The three worksheets are designed so that the students are progressively challenged , starting quite easy and finishing with difficult questions to be answered in the target language. I use this study as part of my TY module.

Stromae- A complete study

Stromae- A complete study

(0)
Five resources based on francophone artist Stromae. I use these resources in my Transition Year module and also with my ordinary level leaving cert classes. First is a worksheet and youtube link. Students watch an interview (in English) with Stromae and must note in English as many interesting points as they can. They then have to use the facts/info to make 8 sentences in French about Stromae (can be done individually or as a pair activity a good opportunity to use dictionaries). Listening activity in the form of a gapfill exercise using the lyrics of ‘Formidable’. A word bank can be given to facilitate differentiation if needed. The next activity and worksheet are based on the song Papaoutai. Firstly, there is a listening activity where the lyrics (printed in the larger font) are laminated and cut up into small chunks of text. Students work together in groups to listen to the song and re-order the lyrics correctly. This listening task is followed with the worksheet which takes a closer look at the lyrics. Students are asked to find different types of words/grammar in the text (e.g. an infinitive verb, an adverb etc…), then have to catagorize positive and negative adjectives and finally have to translate some potentially new words from the lyrics. There are two lyric sheets here for both of the songs mentioned about that can be used for a sing-a-long class activity (Students love it!) . Final worksheet is adapted from an authentic text (le Figaro) and is a quickfire interview with the artist. Accompanied by English comprehension questions. Papaoutai resource can be purhcased separately from My Shop
