Specifically focusing on summarising a text for its purpose, I use this as a standalone lesson with my year 6s!

With less questions than the usual SATs test, this resource was used in my class this week in an hour session, allowing enough time to discuss the vocabulary and practice answering questions worded in a similar way to the tests from the last two years. The theme is ‘Mummies’, which the boys enjoyed. This is a non-fiction paper, but with longer texts and no subheadings.

Designed to facilitate a smooth start to the year. I also used the time we had to design a logo for the front of the passports- r you could just stick your school’s logo on the front.

To help your children create stories, they roll the dice and select the option that comes up. I did this with my class and they loved it! The funny thing is that when they roll an option they don’t want, they suddenly know what they want to write anyway, so win-win! :-)

Following the TES-recommended debate competition resource, this follows a similar, more structured format. A great speaking and listening tool which involves the whole class the whole way through!

These engaging, challenging debates fit into the new OFSTED framework, looking for emphasis on debate. Drawing upon reading, speaking and listening skills, these lessons have proven to be a huge hit with my Year 5 and 6 children!

All resources (including starters) included, including a link to the abridged and original text online. Through debate, comprehension and smaller written tasks, this frameworks a strong written outcome- great for y5-6. Assessed several times in some 'outstanding' lessons, this was the most successful series of lessons I've made in a long time, and the results were some fantastic written stories at the end!
