Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. These pages show some of the words that underpin talking about quantity, position, comparing, placing, arranging and so on. They all need to be practised with many different objects to ensure generalisation. Remember to stress first in a row is always on the left. This is critical to the understanding of instructions in maths and other areas. (First in the queue, however, depends on which way the queue is going. It's hard talking maths words!) At The Seaside, the first in this series based on Language Levels by Marion Blank, brings in familiar seaside creatures and toys. There is scope for working on seaside vocabulary and safety near the sea. A small general vocabulary set is included. The main focus of the Language Levels pages is one-to-one or small group work with children who need carefully graded questions. The Marion Blank Language Levels I-IV move from very direct questioning (approx. 3y but appropriate for older children with impaired/delayed language skills) towards much more abstract work (5+y). Each of the four scenes in the story has questions at each Level. The ideas would also suit English language learning, EAL / ESL / ESOL and Speaking and Listening tasks. The same pictures are included on a single sheet for new activities. There is a simple reader (RA 6-7y) with the four illustrations. The cover note includes suggestions.

Print on A4. Activities are based around understanding that environmental signs may proscribe, prescribe or be for information! One file gives basic shapes for inventing some signs for an island environment. The other gives a Signs dice-and-counter game where players have to interpret the signs as they land on a symbol; a page of sign symbols to cut out and make your own game or story; and a story with gaps to fill by sticking in appropriate signs from the previous page.

A page of pictures with and without labels (also provided as text only) to place according to word function: verbs, nouns or adjectives. They are all words - but what sort of words? Designed using Widgit Communicate Ideas and CIP and illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Bonds to 5 (and subtract from 5). Three similar stories and worksheets. Print the three stories 2-up on A4 paper. Print the worksheets on A4 paper. Suggestions on the worksheet pages use a very visual ‘take-away’ method first (by destroying the correct number of images). Then, the child has to say how many are needed to replace them to get back to 5 before the next sum, and cut the correct number of images for the replacement. Sums are also presented in written form.

Three resources to help children with impaired language skills understand and benefit from this lovely book used in so many schools. Illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols. The pages could be presented with a simplified telling. If the CD is available, it is always useful to hear the story read exactly the same lots of times and the pages could accompany this. The song prompt cards for one of the CD songs lists the 'wow words' - listen and find the card, or use the card to sing the song with the instrumental version. The mind-map is a prompt for children to retell the story in their own way.

Collecting real items to have to hand for the vocabulary and during the games will bring the words to life. BOARD GAME (print single-sided on A4 card) and PAIRS (print 2-sided on A4 card and cut to make game).

Grids illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols. Grids give practice with vocabulary, reading for meaning, and coordinates. The worksheets include extra questions including fill the blanks which can be completed by copying text or cut-and-paste labels.
