What is the origin of the word window, and what does it mean in Old Norse? Do we still use Vikings words in the English language today? I made this page for my students as part of our module on the Vikings in Britain.

A brief look at the nautical origins of the English language nursery rhyme 'Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Quick, Jack Jump Over the Candlestick'. A fun Christmas tree made up of words that can be coloured by students.

A settlements and geography themed colouring page created for a lesson about hamlets, villages, towns, and cities. This is the church and clock tower on the tiny British Channel Island of Alderney. The island has a population of around 1000 but a new church had to built in the 1900s as the island's population increased when British soldiers were stationed on the island and the church was too small to accommodate all the new arrivals. Today the island has more than 4 churches, and just a handful of shops so everything has to be brought in by plane or ship. A Viking themed colouring activity to help students answer questions about Viking Age culture and beliefs. Ideal for primary school students, and students learning English as a foreign language. The Havamal could be used to address behavioural issues with students as it gives advice on how to be a ‘good’ Viking. Be brave, positive, and be nice to your friends.

This is a hand written resource that I created for my class in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, so they could raise funds for an expedition they were planning. The theme was Alice in Wonderland and would help them to work in groups to organise the fundraising events and to raise the budget they needed for their school trip. There are 41 fundraising activities for students, some simple, some requiring a bit more input. A small collection of photos from my time spent working in the Arctic town of Point Barrow, Alaska. Photos were taken before the invention of the digital camera and are on slide film so the resolution isn't as good as it would be today. However, the photos may be of interest to students learning about climate, or wanting to know what life is like if you go to school in the Arctic. Can you spot the polar bear footprints, and polar bear in the distance. Visit the local cemetary, school, softball court, homes, and see the tundra from the air. Each summer the islanders on the island of Alderney in the British Channel Islands, march through the town with lit torches, before throwing them onto the bonfire and enjoying a firework display. This summer tradition is a way to celebrate what it means to live in a close knit community on an island, but also the return to the island after being evacuated during World War Two.
