Lesson 2: Food Chain and the Ecosystem.

Students are introduced to a food web of a pond and they must identify a producer and consumer in the food web and explain why they have chosen these. Key words of producer and consumer are defined. Extension – students are to find a food chain within the food web. Students are to decide where Biotic and Abiotic features are found in a pond. Students are to put the statements onto the diagram in the correct place.

Students are then given a food chain, but it is not in order. Students are to draw a table and place them in the correct order – they decide who is eating who. Extension: students are given a food web of another ecosystem; they must identify the producers of the food web and use a colour pencil to show a food chain in a food web.
Exam Question: Describe where most decomposers live in a pond and explain why are they important? Students are to peer assess each others work and then can improve their answers using their partners feedback. Finally students must imagine a pond has become polluted. They must explain how would this impact on the ecosystem.
