Childhood is supposed to be a time of innocence and joy, but for many individuals, it can be marred by adverse experiences that have a lasting impact on their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Adverse Childhood Experiences, also known as ACEs, encompass a range of traumatic events that can occur during childhood, such as abuse, neglect, household dysfunction, or exposure to violence. These experiences have been shown to have profound effects on an individual’s health and behaviour throughout their lifespan. I will outline the concept of ACEs, explore their effects on individuals, and discuss the importance of addressing and preventing these experiences to promote healthier outcomes for children and adults alike.
