This purposeful unit for **Algebra** includes 6 lessons, and embeds real life scenarios throughout: **Lesson 1** - focuses on exploring how the input and output rules of function machines can help us unlock the logic of algebra. **Lesson 2** - focuses on moving from physical "machines" to formal algebraic expressions **Lesson 3** - focuses on exploring how an expression's value is dependent on the specific number assigned to the variable. **Lesson 4** - focuses on creating and using algebraic formula to describe real-world patterns. **Lesson 5** - focuses on finding the unknown by balancing algebraic equations. **Lesson 6** - focuses on using and applying algebraic equations to problem solve, and crack the code to open the vault! **Knowledge:** I know that a variable is a letter or symbol used to represent a value that can change or is currently unknown. I know the difference between an expression (a mathematical phrase) and an equation (a statement of equality). I know that an inverse operation is the "opposite" action that can be used to isolate a variable and solve an equation. **Skills:** I can translate a word problem into a formal algebraic expression or equation. I can substitute numerical values into a formula to find a solution.
