Ready-to-use climate investigation for ages 14–16, with student activity pack, answer key and teacher guide, using a free interactive climate model.

Students use the free Dig Earth Studio Climate Machine to investigate how different factors influence Earth’s climate. They change variables, compare model outcomes, record evidence and use their results to explain cause-and-effect relationships within the climate system.
Rather than simply reading about climate processes, students experiment with a simplified model and investigate how changing one part of the system can influence the overall result.
Included in the download:

  • Student Activity Pack
  • Answer Key
  • Teacher Guide
  • Link to the free browser-based Climate Machine
    Students investigate:
  • factors that influence Earth’s energy balance and climate
  • relationships between changing conditions and modelled temperature
  • feedbacks and interactions within the climate system
  • how evidence from model experiments can support explanations
  • the strengths and limitations of simplified climate models
The interactive runs in a web browser with no login required and allows students to test scenarios quickly without specialist software.
Suitable for secondary Geography, Environmental Science and general science, particularly around ages 14–16.
The Climate Machine itself is free to use online. This resource provides the structured classroom investigation, recording activities, questions, answers and teacher guidance needed to turn the simulation into a complete learning activity.
