A worksheet on converting binary numbers to decimal using tables. Detailed solutions are included.
This binary to decimal maths worksheet is a no-prep activity testing base-2 place value and exponents. Ideal for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
Full Resource Description
Master number systems and positional notation with this ready-to-use binary to decimal conversion worksheet!
What is the Binary System?
The binary system is a base-2 number system used extensively in digital electronics and computer logic. Unlike our standard decimal system (base-10), which uses ten digits (0–9), binary relies entirely on two symbols: 0 and 1. Each positional column represents a power of 2 (such as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and so on). Converting binary numbers to decimal requires students to identify which place-value slots are “active” (1) and add those values together to find the final numerical total.
This worksheet is designed to strengthen core maths competencies by challenging students to apply their knowledge of multiplication, addition strings, and integer exponents to an alternative layout.
What is Included in this Pack?
• 14 Sequenced Practice Tasks: Problems scale progressively from simple 2-digit binary entries (like 10 and 11) up to comprehensive 9-digit sequences (like 100101111) to allow for clear classroom differentiation.
• Structured Working Grids: Built-in table spaces show students exactly how to line up their binary digits under the consecutive positional values (2^0, 2^1, 2^2, etc.) to limit layout confusion.
• Full Step-by-Step Solutions: A complete teacher answer key is included, detailing the exact addition equations used to arrive at the decimal answer.
Curriculum & Key Stage Alignment
This resource serves as an excellent extension task, maths mastery challenge, or independent homework activity for secondary school learners:
• Key Stage 3 (KS3): Ideal for reinforcing index notation, evaluating powers, and deepening place-value comprehension.
• Key Stage 4 (KS4) / GCSE Maths: Perfect for logic puzzle intervals, structural arithmetic revision, or cross-curricular numeracy context.
