The idea of this resource is for the student to generate their own tongue twisters by incorporating a number of words that contain the same initial sound. There is an accessible word bank for the students to aid them with this process. Once the tongue twister has been formed, the students should rehearse reading, repeating and recalling the tongue twister with accurate pronunciation. This activity can be used in a group as students can try and recall other people’s tongue twisters once they have been whispered to them!
This activity will work phonological awareness as the student has to identify the sounds in words when forming the sentences. It also exercises the student’s memory as they have to hold onto the sentence before repeating it. To add an additional multi-sensory level, the students could act or draw the contents of the sentence once they have heard it. This will be a good measure of how much they have been able to retain.
There are also ready-made sentences included within the resource for the student to try and repeat. These can act as examples to follow if the student is struggling to get started or understand the task.
