This 60-minute lesson introduces IB ESS SL and HL students to perspectives and values through a fictional coastal development scenario. Students consider stakeholder views, evaluate claims and arguments, and reconsider a recommendation when new evidence is introduced.
The teacher walkthrough provides a five-phase lesson sequence, teaching prompts, suggested responses and an optional extension. The student PDF includes the decision brief, stakeholder cards, evidence and activity prompts.
Included: editable teacher walkthrough in Word, teacher PDF and separate student PDF. Response guidance is included in the teacher walkthrough; there is no separate answer key or student Word file. Classroom visuals are included. Students write on separate paper; the student PDF retains teacher appendix page numbers 13–17. The scenario, quotations, estimates and model outputs are invented, and illustrations are not field evidence or to scale. Use the flood chart with Resource C. This is lesson 1 only, not the full topic.
Independently authored by The Science Shop; customer-file integrity and packaging audited. Single-teacher classroom licence.
