Inference / Language Analysis Development Lessons

Three fully-resourced, ready-to-teach PowerPoint lessons that build students’ inference skills from the ground up and bridge them into AQA English Language Paper 1, Question 2. Designed with heavy scaffolding, explicit teaching, and a clear I-do / we-do / you-do structure throughout — ideal for mixed-ability and lower-attaining or intervention groups, but easily stretched for higher attainers.

• Lesson 1 — Inference: Reading Between the Lines

• Lesson 2 — Inference in Action (John Fante & Charles Dickens)
  Applies inference to two contrasting real texts — a fiction extract from 1933 Was a Bad Year (John Fante) and non-fiction from Charles Dickens: A Life (Claire Tomalin). Uses a consistent colour-coded system (task / help / model) and a “clue → inference → effect” chain, then bridges explicitly into Paper 1 Question 2, including a mind-map of inference-generating strategies (zooming, foreshadowing, emotion, atmosphere and more).

• Lesson 3 — Analysing Language in Fiction (Dunkirk)
  Recaps prior learning, then teaches students to spot language techniques and explain their effect on the reader, using an engaging Dunkirk evacuation/rescue context (particularly effective for military or history-linked cohorts). Includes technique teaching, a full I-do / we-do / you-do sequence, and a “build your answer” frame that trains the strong Point → Evidence + Technique → Effect paragraph structure.
