Initial Literacy Baseline Assessment

A comprehensive, teacher-friendly initial literacy baseline assessment designed to help identify a student’s strengths, areas of difficulty and priorities for literacy intervention.

Designed for 2nd–6th Class ( However could be suitable for older students depending on ability), the resource uses graduated checkpoints so teachers can identify a student’s secure level and point of difficulty without requiring every activity to be completed.

The assessment explores oral language, phonological and phonemic awareness, blending and segmenting, decoding, novel-word decoding, reading accuracy and fluency, comprehension, spelling/encoding, morphological awareness, written expression and handwriting.

It also includes detailed teacher observation and recording sheets, error analysis, learner interests and strategies, and a final literacy profile to support the identification of initial teaching priorities and individual targets.

Designed to feel engaging and accessible for children while providing teachers, SETs and literacy tutors with useful information to guide targeted, individualised support.

Please note: This resource is designed as an informal teacher/tutor baseline assessment to support literacy intervention planning. It is not a standardised or diagnostic assessment for dyslexia.
