This lesson aims to examine the reasons why King John argued with his barons and was ultimately forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215.
But what were the terms that King John was forced to accept, and why has the Magna Carta remained so significant throughout history?
Students begin by investigating the key clauses of the Magna Carta, working out what King John agreed to and how these terms sought to limit royal power.
They then evaluate the significance of the Magna Carta in the short, medium and long term, considering its impact on King John, future English monarchs and the rights and freedoms enjoyed today.
Using a variety of historical sources, video footage, retrieval grids and a true-or-false quiz, students build their knowledge and develop their historical thinking skills.
They will also continue to plot the changing power struggle between the king, the Church, the barons and the people as part of a wider sequence of lessons on medieval England.
