A reading pack for the OCR A Level Geography Paper 3: Geographical Debates Disease Dilemmas topic. This set of handouts covers the content of Part 4: How far can diseases be predicted and mitigated against? In particular, it includes content to cover the following parts of the specification:
Increasing global mobility impacts the diffusion of disease and the ability to respond to it, at a variety of scales.
• The role of international organisations, such as the World Heath Organization, in providing international strategies to combat disease, including predicting diseases, gathering data, research, support programmes and their work with agencies and governments.
• Identify a disease outbreak at a global scale, such as H1N1 or SARs, including its rate of spread and patterns of outbreak distribution.
• Case study of the role that one NGO has played in dealing with a disease outbreak within one country at national and local level.

The case study of an NGO (as listed above) is the Red Cross in Haiti, following the cholera epidemic in 2010. This follows on from the Part 1 resources also published on TES.

The handouts are easy to use, with photos, maps and graphs incorporated in the text. Evaluative comments, essential for the top grades, are also included throughout.
