Due to the inadequate coverage of solvation in a textbook, I wrote this text on solvents. It is two pages long and includes a table of common solvents along with their relative polarities (relative to water). The text uses plenty of examples and covers important vocabulary:

solvent, solute, solution, solvation, solubility, polar, non-polar, protic, aprotic, labile, hydrophilic, hydrophobic, miscible, immiscible, interface, debye (dipole moment unit).

Following the text is a laboratory procedure for a simple exposure to common solvents and their properties (can be done in 1 hour).

Following that is a set of questions. The answers are included in a separate file.

This is written with the IB Diploma chemistry course in mind, but would be useful in any advanced secondary chemistry course.
