Here comes yet another ‘hearty’ Sensory story and follow-up activities for you in the run up to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II special 90th Birthday. The story is informative and interactive with loads of fun! It encourages everyone to get into the party mood, work together, have fun and most of all join the Queen in enjoying and celebrating her special day. The story starts with a very brief sensory (tactile) presentation about her Majesty the Queen, (her life, her birthday and things she loves doing and the need to celebrate a special birthday-see story line below). For example, be prepared to incorporate and explore a variety fabrics and textures to signify her lovely dress sense and a variety of other dress accessories that adorn her. The story uses sensory resources to bring to life aspects of Her Majesty’s life and the big party do!. As follow-up activities, pupils can look forward to a choice of activities like crafts, baking, making decorations, making edibles, party crafts-bunting, hats, souvenirs, creative dancing, collage pieces and a real party celebration!. The story is suitable for those working at the ‘early level’ that is, preschoolers, lower primary age pupils (in both Special and mainstream school settings) . The story can also be adjusted to suit older pupils in both mainstream and special school settings as well.
The icing on the cake, is that the story is a generic piece that can be use adjusted to celebrate anybody’s birthday with some simple adjustments to the different categories (see table below). Most of the resources are everyday resources used in class, at home etc. Pound land or the dollar store is great for getting additional resources.
This is a sensor story with cross cutting themes. It has aspects of literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing, expressive arts, environmental and social studies strands culled from the Curriculum for Excellence learning experiences and outcomes.
