This pack contains 5 different maths activities based around a wildlife park. Each activity is centered around a different area of mathematics and a different aspect of the park. The pack is designed to give the pupils an insight into the running of a wildlife park and an understanding of the vital role mathematics plays in its operation.
The pack is ideal for a series of maths lessons that you want to tie in with a visit to a zoo/conservation park or simply practicing maths skills in a real-life context. The whole pack would take around 3 or 4 hours to complete.
Task 1: map scales, compass directions, distance and area (level 3) - based around a map of WIllow Wildlife Park.
Task 2: money operations (level 3) - based around the park gift shop.
Task 3: designing and costing a new bear enclosure (level 2/3).
Task 4: time (level 3/4) - based around a volunteer’s working day at the park.
Task 5: pie chart, percentages (level 4/5) - based around the annual report of the park detailing income sources.
All question answers included.
This pack has been repeatedly used successfully with a whole yr7 year group before a wildlife park visit. It would also be suitable for primary year 6 children.
I hope your students enjoy the activities as much as ours have.
