Edexcel GCSE Music Glossary (New Specification 2016)

Here is a booklet to give to students that has all the musical terminology they need to know for the new specification of the Edexcel GCSE Music course. After feedback from my students, they were having some issues about which keywords correspond to the various musical elements. The booklet has been organised by the musical elements with each keyword and definition in alphabetical order. Typed up in open dyslexic font to ensure that is inclusive for students who may be dyslexic. Can be used as a revision aid and allows Do Now keyword test activities to ensure students are grasping musical vocabulary. Please do rate and comment!

Eine Kleine Nachtmusik - complete unit

Eine Kleine Nachtmusik - complete unit

A complete scheme of work for Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, one of the set works for Eduqas GCSE. This scheme is an ideal introduction to the set work, particularly for Year 10 students. Lesson 1 starts with a musical element recap PowerPoint and full booklet with all GCSE music terminology, which can be used for students to refer through throughout the year. Lessons 2-4 introduce the set work (context, structure, harmony/tonality) with a practical exploration of the work from the performance pack on the Eduqas GCSE website. Lessons 5-11 continue to explore other musical features of the set work (cadences, repetition/contrast, time signatures)ornamentation, , with a variety of different activities. For the learning checkpoint (lesson 9), we use a sample question from the exam board on the set work. Throughout the final lessons, the practical element requires students to begin work on a composition inspired by classical features (we use Sibelius for this) that is assessed at the end using Eduqas criteria, so the series of lessons can be extended to continue work on this.

Lullaby Composition

Lullaby Composition

A PDF format of the Lullaby Worksheet covering covering three to four hour lessons. This is a four page worksheet that can either be written on or used as an accompaniment sheet with Sibelius or other notation program. The task involves composing a simple lullaby in 3/4 time using the words of Spike Milligan’s short poem entitled ‘The Sardine’. The style is placed in its historical context together with the purpose of such compositions. Students can perform the rhythms used (three different ones in 3/4 time) and as a preparatory exercise can echo clap these and perform them in a two or three part round. The link between syllabus and the number of notes must be highlighted to enable students to choose the correct rhythm for each bar of words. When complete, the class will be able to perform the piece using the completed written rhythm. An alternative is to use Sibelius to produce the rhythm string. The sheet includes levels to guide the students’ progress and to enable them to see where they are in their learning. A learning check is also provided as well as a student feedback section. Students can then attach pitch names to each note choosing from either CEG or GBD. In the following lesson students can move to Sibelius to input their rhythm string and to drag the notes to their selected notes. An additional accompanying ‘fill’ part can be added giving specific technical guidance on how to do so. Examples of correct and incorrect work is provided.
