Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 7) Ghana Timeline WITH ANSWERS

Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 7) Ghana Timeline WITH ANSWERS

The lesson looks at the precise timeline in which has led to Ghana being underdeveloped. It uses the Geog.3 book page 10-15 but all materials are provided on the link here needed for the lesson. The textbook can be used as an accompaniment. The settler task works on map skills of interpretation by listing 5 countries are LIDCs. Throughout the lesson the students can assess their own learning using the LO checklist (seen opposite). The starter activity is watching the video link and listing the products that Ghana sell. This is a competition. The main watches a video link attached with targeted questions and then follows with a timeline for Ghana task with worksheets and displays needed attached. The development task is a sales pitch whereby groups of students sell their knowledge on barriers to Ghana's development. This can be used as a metacognitive strategy. I have also attached a Bob Gedolf video about Ghana is you wish to provided for homework or a greater depth of knowledge. The plenary is the game I created, a 'Million Sweet Drop Live' using sweets where groups of students place all sweets on the matrix for the correct question they have 20 seconds to guess to correct answer. The ANSWERS and matrix is provided. To see my FREE STARTER AND PLENARY GENERATOR to see a description of how this and other activities work go to my shop.

Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 5) Ghana Fact File WITH ANSWERS

Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 5) Ghana Fact File WITH ANSWERS

This lesson is an introduction to Ghana and to make students aware of the physical and human landscape. I use the Geog.3 (coffee cup version). The settler to the lesson is to create two questions to test the student's peers in the starter. This is a team-based game called Butt Head where students ask questions to win balls to throw at a cap worn on the student's head. I have put instructions on the slide. The main (seen opposite) is a series of questions to hook the students about the lack of lights in rural Ghana. The questions have marks and ANSWERS on the next slide to peer or self assess. The main activity in the lesson is to create a poster on Ghana as a fact file in pairs using page 10-15 of the Geog.1 book. There is an extension of an empathetic diary entry of resident living in poverty. The development is a conundrum using a keypad as a puzzle for students. The plenary is called 'Mr Right or Mr Wrong' whereby students have to judge whether the facts are right or wrong. ANSWERS are provided to self or peer assess.

Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 4) Colonization of Africa WITH ANSWERS

Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 4) Colonization of Africa WITH ANSWERS

The lesson has a work booklet and introduces students into the historical past of the colonisation of Africa. It has source work and questions from a video link- seen opposite is the ANSWERS. #CHANGED FOR AN OFSTED INSPECTION- RATED OUTSTANDING! The lesson starts with a political cartoon and key questions to discuss in pairs. The starter is GeoSingStar whereby students create a poem, rap or song on 6 facts about Africa- this uses the new edition of the Geog.1 textbook or the pages of the Longmans School Atlas. The mini-plenary can be a task before the starter whereby students work independently to discover facts on Africa using the two textbooks cited. They then use this as a think-pair-share task. This will help with the factual knowledge for the GeoSingStar the following lesson. The main activity is a video link with questions for the scramble for Africa. The challenge task is analysis of political cartoons. Both activities has a mark scheme. The main activity uses the pages of the Geog.1 textbook to create a story board on the colonisation of Africa (the video link can be also be used). This works on the 'because' technique (SEE LEARNING WALL RESOURCES). The development is anagrams with an extension task, which is followed by hot potato. You can use the alternative plenary of GeoSingStar.

Year 7 2017 SOW Spring Term Africa 7) Biomes of Africa [SEN and High ability] WITH ANSWERS

Year 7 2017 SOW Spring Term Africa 7) Biomes of Africa [SEN and High ability] WITH ANSWERS

This lesson centres around biomes of Africa. Each question within the PowerPoint has ANSWERS and relates to the NEW Geog.1 textbook at KS3 but in this lesson we use the documents attached. The lessons begins with a simple food chain for Africa. The second settler is called 'Street View' with students creating a food chain using key terms. This aims to introduce new terminology and is also suitable for low ability. Both activities have ANSWERS. Before the starter, to hook students into learning play them the video attached 'The Very Best of Walk on the Wild Side'. The starter is Continental Dash is using the World Map and post-it notes with the different biomes put on them. The students need to find the post-it notes and place on the World map in the correct place before the timer ends. Use the Geog.1 books to aid them or the IWB to aid low ability learners. This activity can be used as a settler the following lessons to recap learning. The main is a group-based activity (seen opposite). For low ability pair higher students with SEN. I target the roles with certain students but give higher ability more choice. The aim is to use the three different biomes attached as worksheets to create an A3 concept map in the students' group. There are role cards for the activity and a chance to find out the facts from the other biomes. I usually give two lessons to do this activity with mini-presentations (see my FREE presentation template). There is an extension activity for higher sets introducing them into distribution questions for GCSE with ANSWERS and SUCCESS CRITERIA. The other development is proclaim and explain in group presentations. The plenary is Anagrams with an Odd one out. ANSWERS are in the notes on the slide.
