Teacher solutions are included, although students can self-check by completing the answer to the joke correctly.
Students calculate the answers to the subtraction problems. Write the letter in the grid under the same number as the solution.
Some of the subtraction problems require “borrowing”.
Challenge students to create their own Halloween Subtraction (blank sheet included). Create a different subtraction for each letter of the alphabet. Write a joke then make a grid for the solution. Swap them with friends.

In this activity, students use the letters of their name to create fractions, then show them on a fraction strip and a number line. This could be used as an introduction to a fraction lesson or alongside my other All About Me activities as a Back to School introductory lesson. As an extra challenge for more confident students, allow them to calculate the length of each section instead of providing them with the fraction strip.
